Fortress Siege Game 3 - Harlequins vs Tyranids





Mission - Maelstrom of War: Tactical Escalation, Eternal War: Scorched Earth
Deployment type: Dawn of War
Point Limit: 2000

Deployment: 
Holy smokes this was going to be one tough nut to crack. This was the first game I was chosen as a defender and the opposing team threw a swarm of tyranids with some really nasty heavy support in the form of Carnifexes and flying Hive Tyrants my way. Thankfully there would be no turn 1 tyrant drop near my deployment thanks to the FAQ, but the fact that he had so many things in deepstrike made it very difficult for me to deploy favorably with such a small number of drops. I spread out as best I could and hoped for the best.


Tyranids turn 1:


 I didn't even blink properly and the swarm was upon me. Most of the Genestealers moved up with their 3d6 advance move together with the Broodlord and the Venomthropes. The three tyrants came down from deepstrike in his deployment zone to completely take over one side of the table, despite not being in range to shoot anything turn 1. My bikes took a heavy beating turn 1 from the swarm of genestealers, with only 2 staying alive, one barely limping on one wound. Given the absolute ridiculous number of attacks I should count myself lucky. The heavy venom canons from the Carnifexes proved to be my bane though, already removing half the HP off of a Starweaver and wounding the Wraithknight.

Harlequins turn 1:
Okay, counter-punch time. I had to completely abandon my left side of the table, except the brave Archon in the ruins, because those 3 Hive Tyrants would ruin everything's day the following turn. I fell back with the jetbikes, dropped the raider in my deployment zone and moved forward on my right side with my entire army. I managed to inflict a good amount of damage on the two genestealer blobs but the Broodlord rolled well and survived. My plan was to take control of the mid-right side of the table and limit my opponent's field of action to the right side as much as possible. Leaving the Archon and Voidweaver there as targets for slay the warlord and an easy killpoint/objective.


Tyranids turn 2:
The Swarm was thinned but the big brutes were far from out of firepower. Carnifexes killed 1 Starweaver and made a number on the Wraithknight, degrading him. Rippers drop on my backline objective and the three Tyrants take the bait and murder the Voidweaver mercilessly, still staying on the right side of the table. The brave Solitaire who opened the path for the rest of my army to the Broodlord dies to its huge claws - not even its high invuln save helped against the large number of multi-damage attacks. The Archon is still alive behind LOS-blocking terrain.

Harlequins turn 2:
The Broodlord was still alive and I had to deal with all the Carnifexes else I would be shot to pieces next turn. Enhanced senses and the 3 damage venom canon is brutal against my army, possibly even more so than a 1d6 weapon damage. Fusion fails to kill the leftmost carnifex, me rolling abysmally on the hit roll. The broodlord dies but I have an exposed troupe master now, ready to eat a smattering of brainleech worms from the middle Carnifex. Wraithknight multi-charges the squad of 2 carnifexes close to the Neurothrope and manages to tie them up. Disaster strikes when in a vain attempt to take the last wound off the left Carni with a vehicle charge my vehicle is destroyed by its gigantic claws, leaving the Troupe and Master to fend for themselves. I spread out as much as possible to cap objectives.


Tyranids turn 3:
Flyrants continue their domination of the right side. Smites are thrown, hit the Wraithknight and the Archon. The drukhari leader is slain on objective 2, which the tyranids now gain. The carnifex murders the troupe in the ruins. Hero Skyweaver jetbike on 1 wounds still holds objective 5. I have no more units I can sacrifice to appease the tyrants, so I'm bracing for the next turn.



Harlequins turn 3:
I think I lost track of the turns here with the pictures since I was a bit too invested in the game at this point. Needless to say at this point I'm struggling to kill the Carnifexes who are so lucky they keep surviving on one wound. The fact that the Carnies are tied in combat makes them less effective but still scary. Wraithknight is doing a decent job at herding them. The remainder of the small swarm is ousted. Now it's only the big boys on the field.  Cegorach save us!



Tyranids turn 4:
Flyrants swoop in and attack the raider. Lightning fast reflexes saves the day, together with some godly invul rolls it only takes 4 wounds. Nothing much else dies this turn.



Conclusion:
There were two more turns in this game and honestly it was a race against the clock. If the game would have prolonged itself even more I would have died to the Flyrants. Wraithknight manages to kill one. The Flyrants kill my troupe and a tug-of-war starts for the objective previously held by it. Sheer speed allowed me to grab objectives for both Eternal War and Maelstrom but it was a butt-clenching race to the end. On the final turn I was hoping to secure a lead with Slay the Warlord but the Neurothrope survived with some good saves of its own. Final Score 11-9 for the Tyranids. Well played to the hive-mind on this one. Tyrants are awfully scary despite the nerf in the FAQ, expect to still see 3 of them around in Tyranid lists.








Fortress Siege Game 2 - Harlequins vs Ultramarines

Mission - Maelstrom of War: Deadlock, Eternal War: ETC Resupply Drop
Deployment type: Vanguard Strike
Point Limit: 2000
Lists - from team "Vomiting Bloodsnails" 




The Deployment:
This time we are facing yet another castle army with rerolls to hell and back. I spread out the objectives as much as I could to deny my opponent maelstrom point. He only had 2 squads of scouts that would become priority targets for me to eliminate early on, as a turn 1 charge against Guilliman's gunline was not achievable. Same strategy as before - Archon hiding inside a LOS-blocking building, with the rest of the army having a balanced deployment. Raider uses Screaming Jets and is in deepstrike again. My opponent bunkers down most of his army in a ruin together with Guilliman and infiltrates the scouts in the middle ruin of the table to grab the 2 objectives.


Harlequins turn 1:
I advance one Skyweaver and the Voidweaver to capture far-off objectives. The rest of the army clumps up in the middle to deal with the scouts. After shooting and charges the 2 squads of scouts die. The Wraithknight yet again is set up as a big and juicy target for all those rerolling lascannon shots.



Ultramarines turn 1:

With his scouts now dead my opponent goes all-in on the plan to table me. Wraithknight is completely shot to pieces on the first turn and the bikes get a good pounding as well. Vehicles remain mostly untouched.



Harlequins turn 2:
Solitaire disembarks and blitzes to eliminate the marines on the ground floor. All my other vehicles come in and with open topped shoot the Centurion Devastators, which were the meat & potatoes of his army. Having 2+ in cover proved a tough nut to crack even for fusion pistols, but with the help of the raider only one centurion was left. Scoring maelstrom objectives with the Voidweaver and Archon.


Ultramarines turn 2:
The Raider gets shot and damaged and my other vehicles start suffering damage from the few remaining troops my opponent still has. Guilliman decides to join the party and start murdering things with the Emperor's sword. Takes out an entire weaver and the Troupe inside single-handedly.

Harlequins turn 3:
Lascannon predator is melted by the fusion pistols. Troupe and solitaire start working on the support characters left at the bottom of the building, unsuccessfully mind you - that primaris Ancient, Librarian and Apothecary proved redoubtable foes. The fact that he cast Null Zone on his first turn was the reason I couldn't go ham on them with the solitaire before and now my rolls were failing me horribly.

Ultramarines turn 3:
Guilliman is a one-man army and starts destroying vehicles, troupes, characters, the Solitaire all on his own. I am left with barely anything I dedicated to destroying his fortified position. The raider is left crippled, but I am still leading on maelstrom.

Harlequins turn 4:


As much as I hate the idea, I'm starting to sacrificial-pawn units to Guilliman while spreading out the vehicles as much as I can to get out of the Primarch's range. I'm still ahead on maelstrom points but my opponent had a lucky draw and wasn't in a massive disadvantage as in my last game. Archon has to crawl out of cover to get a maelstrom objective.

Ultramarines turn 4:
The Ultramarine fortified position is now barren, but Guilliman managed to murder all the kabalites and destroy another Starweaver just by shooting it. At this point my opponent decides to make a beeline towards my Archon to get Slay the Warlord. He knew I couldn't table him with what I still had so this was his chance to get some points.

Conclusion:
The final turns were just more of the same. Guilliman going janitor on my flyers while running to get to my Archon. The "epic" duel from the final turn left the"Avenging Bean-counter" empty-handed because despite receiving 2 mortal wounds from The Emperor's Sword, my Archon's shadow-field deflected every regular blow. The game ended 14-6 for the Harlequins. It was an entertaining, beer-fueled game, and in fact the ONLY game in the entire tournament where my opponent scored points and wasn't tabled. I think that says something about the "punch" my list had, but still - made the most of what I had and pulled out a win for my team.

Fortress Siege Game 1 - Harlequins vs Astra Militarum




Mission - Maelstrom of War: Contact Lost, Eternal War: Frontline Warfare
Deployment type: Spearhead Assault
Point Limit: 2000

The Deployment:

I had some minor nerves going into this game, seeing what my opponent brought and the massive size difference of the armies model-wise. Nonetheless I decided to keep as cool a head as possible.
Due to the FAQ I was no longer worried about a potential turn 1 tempestus drop so I positioned as best I could on the objectives to try and get an early malestrom lead starting turn 2. The brave Archon camps behind a rock on the lower right side. Wraithknight posted in front to look threatening, flanked by jetbikes and transports.  The raider used Screaming jets to be set up in deepstrike. In my mind the lack of -1 to hit and lower invulnerable save made it a more brittle piece that needed protection in case of a seize and there were too many lascannons on the field to feel comfortable about letting it on the ground.



My opponent created a veritable fortress on his side of the field, castling up his units as best as he could and filling any gaps so that my dancers of death couldn't slip in to wreak havoc. Sentinels with heavy flamers and Tempestus Scions would supposedly provide mobility to his static gunline.



Harlequins turn 1:
The +1 to the roll-off helped me get first turn and my opponent failed to seize. I opted for a cautious advance of my forces - excepting the Wraithknight and the jetbikes. I tried moving the 3 Skyweavers to look the least threatening they can, expecting to go in hard turn 2. It was a gamble, trying to bait the opponent into ignoring a good chunk of the harlequin's protection but one that paid off. Wraithknight Charges the sentinel and a heavy weapon team, combined shuriken fire from the voidweaver and bikes kills a second sentinel. The rest of the shuricannons get scattered among the guard squads out in the open to which they had range, trying to cause morale issues - with little success since there were 3 Ordo Xenos Inquisitors  making sure no filthy hive-scum would flee this battle!



Astra Militarum turn 1:


The gamble paid off! In the above photo we can see the Lord-General measuring a dropzone for his Tempestus force to come in and give the towering Wraith-construct a greeting with copious amounts of overcharged plasma. The Sentinel move up to the Starweaver so as to set it ablaze with its heavy flamer. The entire guard gunline hunkers down and receivers orders to TAKE AIM, thanks to them being Cadians - they get to reroll everything to hit. Who needs Guilliman, right? One crucial mistake I made on my opponent's turn was not using Agents of Vect to counter "Overlapping fields of fire". If that stratagem would have failed the Wraithknight may have had 1-2 wounds left to be an annoyance. Alas, this was my first game against Astra Militarum this new edition so my unfamiliarity with the matchup was showing. The bikes take a pounding and lose 2 members, even with the stratagem to improve their invulnerables and the Wraithknight goes down to the onslaught of shots - even the humble lasgun scoring some wounds.

Harlequins turn 2: 

The gloves were off now. I had to go in as hard as I could this turn or risk getting obliterated by return fire on his next turn. I disembarked the green weaver, blitzed the solitaire and advanced the troupe inside. There were no vehicles I could reliable use their fusion-pistols on and the guardsmen would fall like chaff  to their Harlequin's Embraces. The raider, filled to the brim with Kabalites smashed down on the battlefield to deliver a poisonous payload to the Tempestus Scions. Before retreating the red-weaver to capture an objective I disembarked the troupe to try and tie-up the artillery. The troupe couldn't get to the artillery proper, but the master - The Red Swan - dived over what remained of the artillery defenders with a flourish. The manticore was still a threat so I charged it with the 2 remaining skyweavers, but alas one perished from overwatch. The blitzing solitaire decapitated an Astropath and an Inquisitor.





Astra Militarum Turn 2:
Despite my valiant attempt to lock as much of the guard in combat on my previous round, this Lord General knew how to whip his men into shape even after falling back. Most of the infantry squads received the order to get back into the fight so I would start eating piles of mortar and lasgun fire.
Thankfully the artillery was silenced for the time but my opponent had a nasty surprise for the Solitaire - an Ogrynn Bodyguard with the Deathmask of Ollanius. A nigh-indestructible beatstick who gave the Solitaire a solid beating, barely leaving him alive. My vehicles managed to weather the storm thanks to their natural -1 to hit and I used Lightning Reflexes on the raider to boost it as well. The guard player started faltering after this turn. Not managing to kill my troupe master tying up his artillery and not inflicting enough damage on the vehicles to deny me board presence.



Harlequins turn 3:
This was my opportunity to seal the game, I had a large lead in maelstrom points and kill points that I wanted to solidify as much as possible. By this point I had too few fusion pistols on the board to be able to contend with the artillery pieces and the Voidweaver was nowhere near it to start pinging it with haywire. On this turn I wanted to clear out most of the infantry, especially the mortar teams, while I still had infantry of my own on the field. The lone Troupe Master was still doing an admirable job holding down that flank.  I attempted to slay the warlord with the Solitaire - but I failed, my opponent getting a good roll on his refractor field saves.



Conclusions:

The final two rounds of the game were played at a very brisk pace since we were getting close to the clock, and my opponent knew he couldn't catch up on the victory point lead I had amassed with what he had left and he didn't see the chance to table me in one or two rounds. Solitaire died, Troupe master died, and the last remaining troupe I had on the table also died from the return fire from the guard but it was a retreating volley already. The game ended 18-2 for the Harlequins. This game gave me a large morale boost for the rest of the tournament. I have faced a guard list that outnumbered me greatly and had a shocking amount of firepower and I somehow managed to weather the storm, play for objective and keep his field as busy as I could with my units. The raider filled with kabalites, a disintegrator cannon and a shredder helped immensely against the hordes of guardsmen and would be a key piece in the games to come.





Fortress Siege III - Preamble and lists.



Greetings and well met readers. Long time no see.

I have recently participated in a sizable Warhammer 40k tournament in Oradea by the name of Fortress Siege 3. First and foremost I would like to congratulate my friend Remus for putting the event together and gathering 40k players from all walks of life to come join at this great event - with a healthy mix of people from Cluj, Timisoara, two teams from Hungary and a good representation of the local color as well.

Rules wise it was a team-tournament with 4-man teams following roughly ETC rules together with the new FAQ that just came out. The one visible exception to the FAQ was the fact that the rule of 3 was not enforced(as will be seen in the lists below). Truth be told I was curious as to how a team tournament would work, not having followed the competitive scene very attentively of late. That and the fact that I have only played 2 other ETC scoring games so far have caused me to be a bit apprehensive at first about my performance but it was a good time in the end. As I was about to find out the pairings went as such - two defenders(which could chose their tables) were presented by each captain, for those defenders the captains had a choice of a pair of attackers which could theoretically counter the defenders or offer potentially good match-ups. This turned out to be crucial as we would find out in the first rounds. Being a defender usually meant being put with your back against the wall when it came to counters and games becoming potentially very fast 0-20 affairs, thankfully though my captain deigned that my swift harlequins would be better suited to fill the role of attacker and I was only cast as the defender once. I will go into more details about the ETC scoring in the battle reports.

Rules and organization aside I want to stress some VERY IMPORTANT things that I learned from this experience as someone who is very green in the tournament scene. Always bring a large tray to a tournament. It may not sound like much but when you're moving your army from table to table, deploying from deepstrike or even removing slain models so as to not clutter the board or spend valuable time putting them back in the case you need a tray. Second I would advise everyone going to a large event to pack some glue with them. Both plastic-glue and superglue. Plastic soldiers can break during travel, during battle or even during *gasp* deployment. My blood froze for a second when I heard the necron player's tray of models crash down onto the floor. A number of the wraiths didn't wraith-form fast enough and broke pretty badly. The Avenging Son himself had some issues with his armor as well - plastic-glue was there to mend it quickly. Third, but this should be self-explanatory: bring your codex! It can be hard to keep track of all the details during a game, especially if you haven't played some units or stratagems in a while. Having a codex would have saved me some headache.
